FEATURED MOVIE: GOOD HAIR

Movie Trailer | BlackTree Exclusive #1 | BlackTree Exclusive #2 | Interview with Chris Rock and Nia Long

Movie Trailer

A question from Chris Rocks daughter jumpstarted the making of Good Hair, but the idea for a documentary about the culture of black hair actually took root in Rocks head about 15 years ago while doing a stand-up gig in Atlanta. He noticed his hotel was packed with people, and everyone seemed to be there for the same reason: the Bronner Bros. Hair Show. Hed never heard of it, but to the over 100,000 attendees its a yearly tradition stretching back to the early 50s, with hairstylists, barbers, and hair fanatics from all over the world coming together to discover whats new, best, and different in black hair care. It was a massive gathering, and Rock couldnt believe what a passionate, colorful crowd they were. In short, Rock discovered what a big crazy business black hair was.

I've been around hairdressers my whole life, he says, but I'd never seen anything like this it was just a whole another vibe. So 15 years ago, I had the idea this would make a great film. The idea laid dormant until years later when Rocks daughter asked about her bad hair. He was astonished. I tell my daughters I love them 70 times a day, he says. I hug them and I kiss them I'm that kind of dad. To hear my daughter did not like something about herself when I'm telling her she's beautiful every single minute of the day really had me thinking about hair again.<>br
She was only five at the time, he continues, and she was already having concerns about her hair shes already having hair envy. I felt I needed to understand more deeply how these issues are related: African-American women and their hair. And then I remembered the idea for a documentary.

that movie had me cracking up on some parts and some others i was in shock by some of the comments, how much weave cost etc....wow people I am happy he shined the light on that topic and got alot of people thinking about their priorities. My hair has been through the fire and back meaning.. hot combs, perm burns, braids, finga waves, weave down my butt, to bobs, and Aliyah was my girl back then so I had that style amongst others. I decided to transcend for that to locks (rites of passage) which i wore for 7yrs I cut them off last yr oct. Now I rock an afro and then I cutting it all off.... I am having fun with my beauty in lots of ways... I am A natural WOMAN. even i throw on a wig... i am still beautiful, my spirit is beautiful. peace

That's the way love is. I respect the woman that loves her natural beauty and will not make herself anything less beautiful. I think black women need to become more creative in designing their own quoted nappy hair because for me as a descendant of the African race my hair days were always natural after Mom's put the hot comb experiment on me and really did a number on my grade of hair. Trying to be white all these years and these ladies will not admit it. That's okay because Chris you need to do a straight hair movie involving white women, and men. I think it is all the same, everyone is just not happy with who they are naturally. Thanks to the movies, and commercials in America and the rest of the world. Be yourself and no one else.

I remember how I sat there being brave with my scalp BURNING UP ! After that my hair was always very short, The kids teased me Saying that I looked like a boy. I started wearing a wig at the age of ten. Since then Iv'e done everything from shaving my head at nineteen to doing my own micros. Now its relaxed and color treated (and short)
