We asked our followers which movie to review this weekend and the response was unanimous, the choice was between Predators and Despicable Me and the majority vote was the latter. Well, after taking in an evening viewing of Universal Studios’ newest animated gem all we have to say is…Thank You!
Despicable Me stars Gru (Steve Carell), an aged professional villain who after being challenged by a local evil doer goes on a mission to steal…THE MOON! In an attempt to keep up his sinister reputation Gru sets out to take down Vector (Jason Segal), his annoying nemesis with the help of three unsuspecting orphans named Margo, Agnes and Edith. Despite his best efforts Gru discovers that underneath his evil, conniving and despicable demeanor is a heart of gold.
Ladies and gentlemen this movie caused us to give out our second 5 out of 5 star rating since Oscar season!! We're ashamed to admit it but this movie wasn’t even on our radar, not that we’re not into animated films (well Ekemini isn’t), its just we hadn’t heard or seen much about it. We didn’t go into the film expecting much of anything other than your typical animated Disneyish movie. Instead we got a film that’s arguably the best animated feature since The Incredibles.
We laughed from start to finish. Gru’s Minions, little yellow one eyed thingamabobers, were priceless. They couldn’t speak and yet they provided a great amount of the film’s humor. Being mute didn’t take away from their hilarity, it added to it. Every single character in this cartoon will make you love them. From the villains to the babies, everyone will steal your heart. Can you tell we’re in love with this movie? Despicable Me is the puddle of water in the middle of the desert that is the 2010 summer movie season.
Pharell did an awesome job on the score for this film. We don’t hear hip hop or jazzy sounding music in traditional animated features. Despicable Me DID SOMETHING NEW (hint, hint Hollywood) and used music that not only made the movie more interesting to watch but more relatable to a broader spectrum of moviegoers. The music was classy, upbeat and fresh. Round of applause Pharell. We love you =)
Overall, Despicable Me was a very well done, funny and heart warming film. It’s fun for the adults, the kids and all the in betweeners. Basically, if you don’t love this film something is seriously wrong with you. Yeah. We said it. When an animated film can satisfy both the children who beg to see it and the parents who flip the bill- it’s a winner. Despicable Me won our hearts and the award for this summer’s best movie (so far). See this film and pay the extra five bucks for 3-D. You won’t regret it.
The Chocolate Review gives Despicable Me a 5 out of 5 stars for the following reasons:
- Awesome score! Good job Pharell!
- Heart warming story
- Gru =)
