Inception

Back in 2009 when we first heard the film’s premise, we knew that Inception would be a force of its own. In todays dumbed down Hollywood feature pool it’s very rare that a smart, fresh idea penetrates the murky waters of poorly done and repetitive films. Inception is arguably the most original concept we’ve seen in the past twenty years. In an age where people do so little thinking outside of the box, it was refreshing to see a film that finally challenged us, forcing us to think in order to play along with the story. If you couldn’t tell thus far, Inception is an absolute winner and 2010’s best movie yet.

We won’t even go into Inception’s story because it’s too convoluted to put simply and we don’t want to do it an injustice by simplifying it. As the story unfolds, it becomes more and more clear that the movie will get better and better until you eventually realize the credits are rolling. After Di Caprio’s last film we were a little pessimistic about him returning a changed man. Thankfully, Inception was like a 3 hour long apology for Shutter Island. And we gladly accepted.

Christopher Nolan’s masterful story was only upstaged by the visual world he created. With the help of cinematographer Wally Pfister (The Dark Kinght, Insomnia) and the VFX team the world of Inception became impossible to look away from. It was like nothing we’d ever seen before and without the help of 3D, Inception trumped anything we’ve witnessed this year that used it.

It’s not that the visuals are necessarily breathtaking, which they are, it’s that we haven’t seen it before. Everything that comes out these days has been cut and pasted for the past fifty years. Most of what you experience in Inception is something new. That in itself is an accomplishment worth reward. Though at times Inception felt a bit like The Matrix, it still had its own undeniably unique twist that yielded comparison.

Hanz Zimmer worked his magic from the opening credits setting the tone and leading you on an audio journey that enhanced the visual aspects times a hundred. Cast members Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy and Marion Cotillard were flawless. No one missed a step. They were mere pawns in a unique storytelling process that had the entire audience screaming once it ended. Not out of anger, but out of wanting more.

We’d like to take a moment to thank John Papsidera. We’ve never personally thanked a casting director; then again, we’ve never seen a movie with so many absolutely gorgeous men on one screen before. At one point we lost track of the story because we couldn’t get over how beautiful Tom Hardy’s lips were. They were like a character of their own and we’re honestly pretty insulted that they didn’t get an onscreen credit. That being said this group of handsome leading men didn’t just have looks to their credit; they were all fantastic performers too. And is there anything better than several beautiful men in one beautiful movie? We think not. Thank you John Papsidera. Good looking out =)

Overall, Inception is hands down the best film of the year. It was well worth the wait, the money and the 3 hours stint in theater seat. Every good thing you hear about this movie is true, not hype. Though it was PG-13 is still packed the punch of a film with a steeper rating or talentless actors. It didn’t need any of the extra add-ons used by more vulgar films to mask a bad story. Inception is everything a movie should be. It takes you out of reality, drops you into another world and takes you on a journey you never want to end. Don’t wait. See this movie tonight because everyone will be talking about it on Monday morning. And the only thing more annoying than hearing everyone talk about a movie you haven’t seen, is being around the guy who refuses to let anyone talk about the movie he hasn’t seen. Don’t be that guy. Join the masses.

The Chocolate Review gives Inception 5 out of 5 stars for the following reasons:

  • AMAZING and unique concept!
  • Great performances!
  • Intense and believable
  • For having so many absolutely gorgeous men on one screen at the same time
  • Best Movie of the Year!!!!!
